5Best Tri Shorts yet!  Jan 03, 2010
By SoCal Triathlete
Third pair of tri shorts that I've owned: My first being some Sugoi's which were to thick on the padding and a little awkward to run in. My second being some TYR "Splice Male 9" Race Shorts" which had to thin of padding and the seams started to come undone after the first use.

Well that brings my to my third, the Pearl Izumi's which I've heard so many good things about online. The padding is perfect for all three disciplines. They're really comfortable to wear and I ended up using them 5-6 days a week when I was training. They were $10-$20 more expensive than my previous shorts but totally worth it with the quality of the material. When I first bought them the elastics that surrounds my legs looked a bit loose but they adjust themselves once they're exposed to water. Triathletes like myself tend to have bigger quads and leg muscles so I think thats what the manufacturer had in mind when making these.

!!!WARNING!!!
These are not entirely bullet proof and buyers should really pay attention to the label that states NOT to expose them to chlorine. I was a bit lazy and would go in the chlorine jacuzzi at my gym after swimming. The shorts held up okay for 2 months but after that they started to get a bit see through in the front and back and loose in areas. 3 months later they are still usable though...

Tips for tri-short newbies:
If this is your first time owning a pair of trishorts learn how to take care of them and prolong their lifespan for training. When you finish a nice hard workout cycling or running just wear them when you walk into the shower to rinse them off. It's best to rinse them with cold water so after swimming. You can just spray them in the sink and then hang them somewhere out of the sun to dry. Also, NEVER curl your shorts in a ball (especially wet) for a long period of time.

If you train in a chlorine pool or know that you will come in contact with chlorine (like I did), do what I am doing now:
Buy a separate pair of shorts for swimming called jammers...I would suggest getting the "Speedo Men's Race Endurance+ Polyester Solid Jammer Swimsuit". They are meant for chlorine and give just about the same feeling that the Pearl tri-shorts give in the water minus the padding. They're $36 but totally worth it as both shorts will last you a long time. Oh and with regards to the speedo jammers, be sure to order a size larger than what you normally wear because the legs are known to be very a bit tighter than regular sizing.

Overall the Pearl Izumi's are a great choice and I will be ordering another pair soon!

~~~~UPDATE~~~~
My old pair is STILL usable. Nevertheless, I decided to shop for a new pair and I'm shocked at the prices amazon has for these now. I paid $25 with free shipping on my original pair. Now I can't even get them in my size in black, and if I settled for "Shadow Grey" I'd be paying $54!! It looks like Amazon is just about sold out and all that is left is odd sizes and expensive vendors...but hey, triathlon season is in full swing. Do yourself a favor and shop around online before ordering here. Still beats paying $100 at your local store.
5Just ran a Half Iron in them  Jul 07, 2008
By Michael L. Howard "Mike"
I just ran a Half Iron man in these shorts. Although they are fairly new with only two washings, they withstood a 1.2 mile swim, 58 mile bike and 13.1 mile run in rain, and I had absolutely no chafing or rubbing. The bike pad was just big enough to protect, but not so big to be noticable in the run. It wicked a way sweat and rain perfectly.
5Excellent if you know the "packaging"  Jan 23, 2009
By Paul K. Shreeman
I bought this after running in my first triathlon in a "boxer" swimming shorts and ended up with raw thighs afterwards. First time I wore this, I swam around a lake, and rode the bike for several miles. Afterwards, my private part was rubbed raw. I realized that I probably "packaged" my parts in wrong place, probably right on the heavy-duty stitches. On my second triathlon, with my part safety arranged away from those heavy stitches, I went totally raw-free, so I am very happy customer.
2Worst of both worlds  Mar 04, 2010
By Anon
If you're looking for a pair of shorts for biking and running don't buy these.
I've been wearing these while training 6 days a week for the last couple of months while training this winter for a 70.3. Most of my riding has been on spin bikes and the padding doesn't help at all even with the wide comfortable seats on the bikes. The padding actually feels rougher than the straight compression shorts I was wearing. And then when I get off the bike to run--after a couple of miles they start to chafe in exactly the place they should be adding comfort.
I've really tried to give them a chance, and they aren't horrible; it's just annoying to find a chafed up spot at the end of a not too long workout (and for about $50 they probably should do more).
/ I've also taken care of them as recommended and they're properly sized.
// I know all the cool kids wear combo swim/bike/running clothes, but I'm thinking I'll just wear a proper pair of bike shorts and then take the extra 30 seconds at T2 to change into running shorts for the run.
2Get what you pay for  Jun 23, 2011
By R. Hardy
These are definitely on the cheap side of biking/tri shorts, and you get what you pay for. They'll get the job done. I don't have any real issues with seams/rubbing and the chamois is definitely comfortable enough. There are pieces of fabric pulling out of the drawstring holes, though, and I've only worn these 10 times or so. Also, they seem to be cut somewhat tight - I generally wear a medium, and understand tri shorts are supposed to be tight, but these allow EXTREMELY little room for... well, you get the idea.
Overall, if I was in the market for a cheap pair of bike/tri shorts, I would buy these again. Although you're money is probably better spent on a nicer pair - pay once, cry once.
